Celadon and Cobalt is the final project of the Beginning Wheel Throwing class at California College of the Arts. Students are asked to recreate historical pots found in museum collections. They are tasked with understanding the size, scale, throwing techniques and decorative strategies of those pots, as well as being introduced to the history and significance of cobalt brushwork and celadon carving. Sometimes students are asked to recreate the pots exactly, other times they are given creative license to "remix" the pots by engaging in a conversation between the past and present, the politics of place and a cultural exchange.
