Organs is the very first project in Art 15 at UC Berkeley. Art 15 is an introductory class to the tools, techniques, materials, as well as the concepts and design principles of art, through the use and practice of ceramics. For the Organs projects, students are asked to select an internal organ, and then using a printed image, they learn how to scale it up to at least 12 inches in one dimension and build, sculpt and carve. They learn basic color theory and underglazing techniques. Once they have the completed organ, they are asked to photograph the organ on location and consider how the juxtaposition of the two (organ and location) creates a new way to see and understand either the organ or location.
